Minghao Liu is an internationally regarded and in-demand tenor widely praised for his “easy and powerful high notes and well-polished bel canto musicality.”
In 2020, he was catapulted to world-wide recognition as the Grand Prize winner of the internationally acclaimed Pesaro International Music Competition in Pesaro, Italy, a competition named after composer Gioachino Rossini. This impressive win resulted in an immediate, leading engagement in 2021 in Rossini’s most well-known opera, Il barbiere di Siviglia at the world-famous company, establishing Liu as a leading tenor of his generation.
A favorite of international voice competitions, Mr. Liu recently added multiple international competition wins, as the recipient of the top prizes in the widely acclaimed and competitive 2025 Luciano Pavarotti Competition, where he garnered further interest from industry leaders, and the Lissner Award at the 2024 Opera Index Vocal Competition in New York City.
Mr. Liu makes a number of prestigious international debuts including the title role in Rossini’s Le Comte Ory in the summer of 2025 in San Francisco, the leading role of Count Almaviva in Rossini’s Il Barbiere di Siviglia at Opera Omaha in the fall of 2025, repeating the role for his debut with San Diego Opera, as well as adding the leading tenor role in Rossini’s Il Viaggio a Reims for his role and company debut with Opera Philadelphia. Liu also makes important debuts and performs multiple solo recitals with the Florida Grand Opera in Miami and the Berkshire Opera Festival in Massachusetts.
Mr. Liu received his Bachelor and Master of Music degrees at S.S. Prokofiev Music Conservatory in Donetsk and continued his studies at the University of Alberta, Canada, and the Frost School of Music in Miami, receiving full scholarships. After finishing his studies, he received a top scholarship from the Franz Schubert Institute in Baden, Austria.
